A Mystery Great and Wondrous
27 May 2001 until 30 July 2001
The Church of Greece is commemorating the 2000th anniversary of the joyful event of the Lord made Man. The culmination of its celebration is the exhibition "A Mystery Great and Wondrous", organized in the Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens, in collaboration of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Icons and ecclesiastical treasures from churches and monasteries, museums and private collections in Greece are displayed, as well as splendid keimelia from the Holy Monastery of St Catherine on Mt Sinai. Outstanding among the last is the sixth-century encaustic icon of Christ Pantokrator, perhaps the earliest surviving depiction on a portable icon of the figure of the Lord in the type of Ruler of the World, which has never before travelled from Sinai.
