Saint Nicholas (01363)

BXM: 001363
Exhibition room: II.4 The wall paintings of a Byzantine church: Episkopi in Evrytania

Date: Early 11th c.

Dimensions (cm): 153 X 92.5
Provenance: Episkopi, Evrytania

St Nicholas is depicted frontally, dressed in priestly vestments.  He is blessing with his right hand, while in his left he holds a closed Gospel.  His halo is decorated around the edge by a series of pearls.  The large expressive eyes and the bold outlines are characteristic of the way the figure is painted.  The painting comes from the church of the Dormition of the Virgin in Episkopi in Evrytania and belongs to the second painted layer, dated to the 11th century, which may only have covered the middle and lower registers of certain walls and may not have been a coherent iconographic programme.
